Grabar entrevistas en inglés me brinda la oportunidad de conocer gente muy interesante y al mismo tiempo compartir contigo material de calidad, para disfrutar del inglés, más que estudiarlo (much better, right?). La de hoy dura más de 40 minutos. So take a seat and grab your tea/coffe… Entrevista a Joan Tubau – Cómo aprender inglés de verdad El invitado de hoy se llama Joan Tubau. Tiene 26 años, es catalán y además de activo y muy influyente en Twitter, es economista y trabaja como profesor en la Universidad Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona. Tiene, además, un blog o diario muy interesante donde escribe y mezcla sus dos grandes pasiones: la economía y la escritura. Guts & Glory es el nombre de su diario, y como lector habitual te aseguro que no te dejará indiferente (ya estás tardando en echarle un vistazo). En él habla de economía, la crisis, finanzas, filosofía, desarrollo profesional, leones y gacelas (entre otras cosas). “Guts” significa vísceras y tripas pero también puede entenderse en inglés como agallas y valentía, cojones que diría un inversor de Silicon Valley. “No guts, no glory” es una expresión inglesa muy parecida a “no pain, no gain”. Todo lo que merece la pena en la vida requiere esfuerzo y dedicación. Y hablando de esfuerzo y dedicación, el inglés de Joan es muy alto, se lo ha currado. Sabía que había pasado tiempo en Estados Unidos, así que no me sorprendió para nada descubrir que su nivel es más que fluido. Con total naturalidad accedió a grabar la entrevista en inglés, sin preparación alguna. No guts, no glory. Su pronunciación no es de Oxford o sacada de un listening de Cambridge, pero te digo desde ya que podría presentarse perfectamente al examen C1, el famoso Advanced, y aprobarlo sin estudiar mucho. I hope everything’s fine. So, you might have noticed that sentence above is quite strange but familiar at the same time: the money does not give you the happiness. Could you tell what the mistakes are? If not, this is your class. Thing is, the correct sentence would be: money does not give/bring happiness. We use no article. And that’s not the only mistake students make, but there are a bunch of typical errors I want you to destroy today. So let’s look at it. Bienvenido al Feed de Daway Inglés. Quarter past, quarter to, half past. Do you know how to tell the time in English? Bienvenido, de nuevo, al curso de inglés básico. En la clase hoy voy a explicarte cómo decir y preguntar por la hora en inglés, paso muy importante para tu aprendizaje. Se trata de algo que usarás cada dos por tres y que, a pesar de la dificultad que encuentran muchos alumnos, es muy fácil de asimilar una vez tengas la correcta explicación. Vamos a ello, let’s do this! Time words – la hora en inglés Antes de explicar la gramática y expresiones típicas de la hora en inglés (repito, muy fácil), quiero que te quede clara la ortografía y pronunciación de las palabras básicas que representan el tiempo en inglés. Palabras que habrás visto cientos de veces pero que probablemente hayas confundido alguna vez. These are the words: Second – segundo /sekend/ Minute – minuto /minit/ Hour – hora /agua/ (sí, literalmente, agua) Day – día /dei/ Week – semana /wiik/ Month – mes /manz/ Year – año /yia/ Cómo preguntar por la hora en inglés What time is it? What’s the time, please? Excuse me. Have you got the time? Esas son las tres preguntas más comunes que oirás decir a nativos al preguntar por la hora. Las tres son válidas y puedes usar cualquiera. La primera sería “qué hora es?” mientras que las otras dos serían más bien “disculpe, qué hora es?/me puede decir la hora?”. Cómo responder It is… Sí, así de sencillo. Usamos el pronombre “it” y la forma correspondiente del verbo ser, “is”. Eso equivaldría a “son las/es la…”. Cómo decir la hora Ok, so this is the important part. El reloj convencional, como bien sabes, puede ser dividido en dos mitades si trazamos una línea recta que corte las doce en punto y las seis. I want you to draw a clock on a paper. Dibuja un reloj (un círculo) en un papel o libreta. Que por cierto, la palabra “clock” es reloj de pared mientras que “watch” es reloj de mano. De acuerdo. Quiero que dibujes, desde las doce hasta las seis, ese medio círculo de un color (for example, with a red pen or a blue pen or pencil) mientras que la otra mitad, desde las seis hasta las doce de nuevo con un color distinto, de modo que tengamos las dos mitades bien diferenciadas. Aquí tienes un buenísimo diagrama que he encontrado en (educa2.madrid.org): 12 – 6 PAST So, from twelve to six we say “it is X past”. Es decir, para decir la hora desde las doce hasta las seis (y cinco, y cuarto, y media, y diez minutos, y veinte, etc) usamos: It is + cantidad de tiempo pasado + PAST + hour (la hora que sea) Example: it is twenty past five (significa veinte minutos pasados de las cinco, o sea, las cinco y veinte) It is ten past twelve (las doce y diez, o diez minutos pasados de las doce)  6 – 12 TO Now things change a little bit. Ahora hay un pequeño cambio. En lugar de past, vamos a usar la preposición to. Si recuerdas, la preposición to tiene la connotación de “hacia, para”, como en la frase I go to school (voy al colegio). Pues en este caso, diremos el tiempo que falta para la siguiente hora. Examples: Five to ten (cinco minutos para las diez, es decir, las diez menos cinco) Twenty to seven (veinte minutos para las siete, las siete menos veinte) Cómo se dice y media, y cuarto, menos cuarto, etc This is very, very easy. If you want to say 30 minutes past, you say “half past”. La palabra half significa mitad (recuerdas las dos mitadas que has dibujado?). So…it is half past five (son las cinco y media, literalmente media pasada de las cinco). More examples: It is half past ten (las diez y media) It is half past nine (las nueve y media) If you want to say 15 minutes past, you say “quarter past/a quarter past”: Quarter past two / A quarter past two (las dos y cuarto) And this is exactly the same for ther other half (la otra mitad, de seis hasta las doce): A quarter to six / Quarter to six (las seis menos cuarto) Quarter to eleven / A quarter to eleven (las once menos cuarto) El modo gandúl de decir la hora Un pequeño detalle que muchos alumnos me preguntan es si se puede decir la hora de un modo simplificado. Yeah. Igual que ocurre en el mundo hispanohablante, podemos decir la hora de dos formas, la larga o la que simplemente dice los dos dígitos: dos y media / dos treinta. Es decir: half past two / two thirty. It is half past two or it is two thirty. Both are correct (ambas se usan y se aceptan). More examples: It is six ten (6:10), it is seven forty five (7:45), it is eleven twelve (11:12), it is quarter past three (3:15) Preposiciones y notas finales Finally, how to use prepositions to speak about the time. Hay dos formas de usar las preposiciones para hablar de la hora. Cuando hablemos de horas concretas, usaremos “at”: My English class is at five (mi clase es a las cinco) The train leaves at half past two (el tren sale a las dos y media) Cuando queramos usar un rango, usaremos “from….to…”: My class is from five to six (es de las cinco a las seis) Por último, dos expresiones que los alumnos me preguntan: 12:00 midday/noon (mediodía, de ahí que pasadas las doce se diga good afternoon) What time is it? It is midday/noon 24:00 midnight (medianoche). What time is it, please? It is midnight That’s it! And that’s all. Now you can speak about the time, you are a master of times! Ahora ya tienes todo lo que necesitas saber sobre la hora. So you might have heard expressions such as ‘The Lord of the Rings was written by Tolkien’. ‘Harry Potter was written by J.K Rowling’ and yes, the animals in your local zoo are fed by the same guy on Tuesday morning. What do all these sentences have in common? Pretty simple to tell at your level, right? The ive voice. All of these sentences use it. So that’s what you will learn today in the advanced English course. Let’s do this! Curso de inglés B2 – The ive voice The ive voice is one of the best resources you can use for a good English level, especially if you’re preparing an official exam such as FCE Cambridge exam. You can show off using it because it represents an advanced level and a formal , which is handy for your writing (if you’re doing a report, essay, etc). The nuts and bolts of the ive voice is as simple as follows: In the Active voice (the normal or most common one) you will normally get a subject followed by a verb, then an object: ‘I wrote a book’ (‘I’ is subject, ‘wrote’ is verb and ‘a book’ is the object). In this type of sentence, what we want to emphasize or what we focus on is the subject, the doer of the action, the person who performs the action of the verb. Other examples would be: Peter reads a lot of books, Emma made a delicious meal, John created a website, etc. So that’s the active voice, and I know you’re pretty familiar with it. So what’s different in the ive one? The ive voice changes or turns the object into the main element of the sentence, it turns it into the subject. So object becomes subject. Here, the action is the real emphasis of the sentence, not its doer. Pay attention here: I wrote a book (Active Voice) A book was written by me (ive Voice) The object, which was at the end in the first sentence, goes to the first position. The main verb is the verb ‘to be’, and we use the participle right after it. If you want to mention who the agent was, you have to use the preposition “by”. That’s why you normally see this in the streets, when you see graffiti art on walls: by Pepe! (it really means, made by Pepe, it was made by Pepe).
