High as a Comet #30: Psycho-Giallo 1b1b1x

**ENGLISH BELOW** 🇪🇸 ¡Hola amigas y amigos! Seguimos con la temática halloweenesca una semana más (y mantenemos el retraso: algún día pillaremos el ritmo de los directos con los podcasts). Dado que en el episodio anterior vimos que la psicodelia se prestaba de muchas maneras diferentes a la temática terrorífica, ocultista y malrollera en general, esta semana nos enfrascamos en uno de los subgéneros más interesantes (y tristemente muertos) del cine: el giallo. Uno de los elementos clave del cine giallo (si no conocéis: thrillers/suspense/terror con asesinatos proto-gore, terror psicológico, explotación de todos los tipos y siempre rayando en el erotismo) fue sin duda su música, con un sonido propio muy definido cuya huella probablemente haya sobrevivido a la del giallo como género cinematográfico. Sea por la época, la mitología que rodea al giallo (esas portadas...) o las influencias directas de sus compositores, el caso es que la carga psicodélica es muy alta en las bandas sonoras del giallo. De las bandas sonoras de estas películas (Demoni, ambas versiones de Suspiria, Quattro mosche di velluto grigio...) hemos rescatado una selección de temas fabulosamente ácidos que más allá de su sonido retro, son por derecho propio clásicos del cine (en su mayoría). Complementan el episodio algunos homenajes mucho más recientes hechos por fans del género, con varias bandas sonoras para películas más nuevas, tanto reales (Broadcast) como imaginarias (véase la recopilación de Guss What... o el reciente disco de Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats). We’re continuing with the Halloween theme for another week (and yes, still running behind schedule—one day, we’ll catch up with syncing live shows to the podcasts). In the previous episode, we explored how psychedelia lends itself to the spooky, occult, and eerie themes in many different ways. This week, we’re diving into one of the most fascinating (and sadly defunct) subgenres of cinema: giallo. One of the key elements of giallo cinema (for those unfamiliar: think thrillers/suspense/horror with proto-gore murders, psychological terror, all kinds of exploitation, and often skirting erotica) was undoubtedly its music. It had a very distinctive sound, whose legacy has arguably outlived giallo as a film genre. Whether due to its era, the mythology surrounding giallo (those iconic covers…), or the direct influences of its composers, the psychedelic vibe in giallo soundtracks is unmistakable. From the soundtracks of films like Demoni, both versions of Suspiria, and Quattro Mosche di Velluto Grigio, we’ve put together a selection of wonderfully trippy tracks that, beyond their retro charm, stand as cinematic classics in their own right (for the most part). Complementing the episode are several more recent tributes by fans of the genre, featuring soundtracks for newer films, both real (Broadcast) and imagined (like the Guss What... compilation or the recent album by Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats).
