Title: The Moonstone Author: Wilkie Collins Narrator: Clive Swift, Chris Larkin Format: Abridged Length: 3 hrs and 55 mins Language: English Release date: 10-26-00 Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: When Rachel Verinder inherits the Moonstone, a huge and priceless diamond, her delight turns to dismay when the gem disappears. But this is no ordinary theft. Sergeant Cuff of Scotland Yard is called in and immediately suspects an intricate plot. However, not even his powers of detection can penetrate fully the mysteries surrounding the diamond. And as we listen to each character tell their version of the events, layer upon layer of drama and suspense builds to the final and astonishing denouement of the first, and most magnificent, English detective novel. Editorial Reviews: Clive Swift and Chris Larkin are the perfect duo of talented storytellers to take on this classic story of mystery and suspense. Accents are handled with professionalism and round out the creation of the characters clearly defined personalities. The narrators also build tension in their deliveries and are both haunting and detailed in their descriptions. Musical interludes add to this production, creating a sense of time and place. Listeners will be astonished by the effectiveness of this early form of the detective mystery. Reviews: Interesting and unexpected twists to this mystery! There were so many aspects I thoroughly enjoyed in this book. The mystery has some great twists and turns as well as the various unique characters! The book is written from several character perspectives, which is fun for the most part. One character in particular though, was not so fun to listen too. She just went on and on and from an exhausting and close-mindedness religious mindset ..... The first character reminded me so much of "Mr. Carson" on Downton Abbey that I really enjoyed reading anything from him. Since this was written in the latter half of the 1800's, I anticipated a tougher read given how much are language has changed since then, but I was quite relieved and delighted that it was very easy to read. Charming look into the 19th century One of the earliest crime novels, the story of The Moonstone is told in succession by witnesses who were present at various points in the story. Although the narrative takes a while to get started and fully engage the reader, the result is ultimately a charming view into the 19th century with characters that would be at home in a Dickens tale. The resolution of the mystery is a bit strained but if one willingly suspends disbelief just a bit it's fairly satisfying. Collins, a good friend of Dickens, wrote many of his works as serials in magazines. This results is his making the stories more wordy than necessary to propel the plot (I think they got paid by the word!), But if you like Dickens, you'll easily forgive this. These fellows didn't live long enough to profit off the movie rights, and an author has to eat, after all. Good read for a long trip or over the summer A great "whodunit" mystery novel. I thought I would hate reading this since it was an older book, but I was into it. The switch between narrators was slightly annoying and a little abrupt, but there was some comic relief and it helped you get a bigger picture than Betteredge could do by himself. It is longer but worth it. Now I see where Agatha Christie got her ideas The book reminds me a lot of an Agatha Christie type mystery, but she took Collins' characters and plot ideas to a whole other level. Still, I've enjoyed the language and style of writing in this book. 67124i
