If you listen to environmentalists, governments and equipment manufacturers, the transition from diesel to electric or hydrogen will be smooth and seamless.  The truth, however, is likely to be rather different. The notion that we will all wake one day to a new diesel-free dawn is, at best, fanciful; at worst, that notion is misleading.  The change, when it comes, will be slow and staggered.  In all likelihood, there will be slips, trips and false starts on the road to zero emissions.
